Local business conglomerate Edison Group has become the new national distributor of USA-based telecommunication company Motorola as the latter has cancelled its partnership with existing distributor Salextra.

Motorola and Edison Group announced the new partnership at an event held on Tuesday where the USA brand launched two new smartphones --- E32 and E22.

The Edison Group continues to maintain its reputation in electronics, power, mobile, communication, and many other businesses. Symphony Mobile is at the top of the country, and Edison Power is working to be among the top five in the power distribution sector in the next 3 to 4 years. Anjan Chandra Dev, Staff Reporter for The Daily Messenger, speaks to Jakaria Shahid, Managing Director, Edison Group. He spoke in detail about Edison Power's current position and future plans in the interview.
 
The Daily Messenger: Edison Power's journey started in 2008; how has the experience been in this 15-year journey?

Jakaria Shahid: Established in 2008, Edison Power embarked on its journey alongside Symphony Mobile, contributing to the energy sector amidst the confusion surrounding the different facets of power. Often overlooked, there are three primary categories defining the power domain: power generation, transmission, and distribution.   Specializing in power distribution, Edison Power has been at the forefront of this sector for the past 15 years. The current government has done a lot of work in the development of electricity infrastructure, and as a result, there has been a lot of growth in distribution. Earlier, it used to be input; now we have made our own factory from where we are getting generators and transmissions.

‘Edison Power to be Top 5 in Power Distribution Sector in the Next 3 to 4 Years’

Edison, the parent company of mobile handset brand Symphony, hopes to invest a few hundred crore taka in different sectors of the Bangladeshi economy in the next eighteen months, ranging from e-commerce to electrical appliances, says its top executive.

“Our target is to increase our presence in many consumer segments,” says the group's Managing Director Jakaria Shahid. “We aim to have a substantial larger footprint in Bangladesh within a few years.”

Edison Group has launched a flagship smartphone with 6 GB RAM for the first time, named 'Helio 30'.

Priced at Tk 14,990, the phone with leather back part design uses a 6.67-inch in-cell IPS technology punch-hole display. Its resolution is 1080x2400 pixels or full HD Plus, reads a press release.

Run by the Android 11 operating system, the phone is powered by MediaTek's premium category Helio P70 12 nm chipset & 2.1 GHz Octacore processor. The GPU has a speed of 900 MHz. With 6 GB RAM, get great performance. Its internal storage is 128 GB; with the MMC it can be expanded up to 256 GB.

বাংলাদেশ মোবাইল ফোন ইমপোর্টার্স অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের (বিএমপিআইএ) সাধারণ সম্পাদক ও দেশীয় মোবাইল ফোন ব্র্যান্ড সিম্ফনির ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক জাকারিয়া শাহীদ জানালেন, দেশে অবৈধ মোবাইল ফোনের বাজার (গ্রে মার্কেট) আবার বড় হচ্ছে। সরকারি উদ্যোগে মোবাইল ফোন রেজিস্ট্রেশনের ফলে গ্রে মার্কেট নেমে গিয়েছিল ১০ শতাংশের নিচে। এখন আবার বেড়ে হয়েছে ৩০-৩৫ শতাংশ। দেশে এই সময় মোবাইল ফোনের বাজার খারাপ যাচ্ছে। ফেব্রুয়ারি থেকে বাজার ঘুরে দাঁড়াবে বলে আশাবাদী তিনি।

জাকারিয়া শাহীদ আরও জানান, সিম্ফনিই ওইএম মোবাইল ফোন নেপালে রফতানি করছে। দেশের বাইরে সিম্ফনি নামেই বিক্রি হচ্ছে ফোনটি। এভাবেই ‘মেড ইন বাংলাদেশ’ ফোন দেশের বাইরে ছড়িয়ে দিতে চান জাকারিয়া।  বললেন, মেড ইন বাংলাদেশ ফোন বিশ্বে বাংলাদেশকে উৎপাদক হিসেবে চেনাবে।
